Even though the mouthwash plays an important role in improving your oral care, it can’t replace flossing. Mouthwashes and flossing have different functions, so we’d like to make you aware of them.
There are two types of the mouthwash: cosmetic and therapeutic. The cosmetic mouthwash provides only a temporary relief from bad breath and has a nice taste, but unfortunately this kind of mouthwash doesn’t kill any bacteria. Nevertheless, therapeutic mouthwash provides way stronger benefits. First of all, it contains many different ingredients such as fluoride or antimicrobial agents. Those ingredients help to get rid of plaque buildup and eliminate the chances of potential development of calculus. Additionally, therapeutic rinses reduce the chance of cavities, gingivitis and bad breath. Finally, some therapeutic mouthwashes are prescribed to patients after surgeries or other orthodontic procedures.
Meanwhile, flossing has different benefits. Flossing is a perfect fighter with plaque formation, it removes it even before the plaque can harden and become calculus. When mouthwash only reduces buildup, flossing removes plaque, especially between teeth, as your toothbrush do not get in between your teeth so well. It is crucial to floss, as if the plaque is not removed, it can harden and turn into calculus. Except this, when the plaque builds up the gum line, the gum disease can be provoked.
To summarize, we recommend you to use both: mouthwash and floss. You should also know that there are few types of floss: it can have a thin string shape or a tape; it can be waxed and unwaxed. If you get one type of a floss, and you experience difficulties while flossing, you might want to try a different type of floss; eventually you’ll find the one that perfectly fits your needs.
